Includes rare photos of the prototypes that didn’t make production.
The definitive international history of Jaguar’s classic grand tourer, the XJ-S, from inception until the end of production. Not only essential reading, but a great reference source for all owners and would-be owners. Includes really useful advice on buying, running and restoration. Includes 270 photos and illustrations.
If you are contemplating purchasing one of these complex but immensely satisfying grand tourers you will not begrudge the £45 being asked for this book - indeed it would be folly to proceed without reading it in minute detail ... For the rest of us, however, the trials and tribulations of how the talented Jaguar engineers and managers got the XJ-S to market and beyond just makes for fascinating reading and reflects the turmoil going on within the wider group and the British motor industry as a whole.

Ten points from the jury for Veloce and Brian Long. Well done!
Oldtimer Magazine/ Dreamcar Magazine
Brian Long’s exhaustive book on the Jaguar XJ-S is timely, given that this grand tourer is finally starting to step out of the E-type’s shadow. Long’s commitment to tracking down obscure pieces of information while allowing the XJ-S story to unfold chronologically also makes for a startling level of detail that pulls you into the car’s world, using large reproductions of period adverts, candid shot taken at press launches and behind-the-scenes iages from the prototype workshop to underline the facts.
What’s most interesting is the way Long demonstrates how the prevailing climate affected each evolution, from a concerted effort to build a Maserati-basher in the Seventies, only for the oil crisis and American crash regulations to hobble it, before a first rebirth as a luxury item aimed at Eighties yuppies, before trading on its own history in the Nineties heritage boom.
INTEREST IN Jaguar’s long-served and long-legged XJ-S is on the rise, and this book from prolific author Long is a good introduction to the model.
Period covered: 1976 to 1996.
All Jaguar XJ-S models covered.
