Description

The long awaited updated and revised ‘Bible’ for all buggy enthusiasts, written by the world’s leading expert on dune buggies. Containing an A-Z of the best-known American and British buggy marques, plus stunning photography, production dates, identification tips and a brief history of each model, this is a must-have book for all true buggistas.

Synopsis

The book introduces the reader to the whole cult of the dune buggy, from its earliest beginnings as a crude off-road vehicle in the 1920s, to the explosion of glass fibre-bodied and VW-based fun cars that became the cult transport of teenagers everywhere in the 1960s and 1970s. With histories, production details, dates and identification tips for over 70 US and UK buggies, the book will help identify the many marques that have been produced over the years. Using period photographs and archive material, combined with amazing contemporary photography, the book is a visual feast, and also contains sections on buggies and celebrities for those that want to spot pop stars, TV hosts and racing drivers posing with period vehicles.

Independent Reviews

This fascinating and comprehensive pictorial guide catalogues as many of these fun runabouts as has been possible, worldwide ... If you like beach buggies, you'll love this book.
Classic American

THIS book details the differences between each make and model of dune buggy. The first version of this A-to-Z guide came out in the nineties, and the 2013 edition adds sections on the buggy in advertising, and magazine features. We also like the pictures of celebs driving buggies – there are shots of Steve McQueen, The Monkees, Elvis and Jimi Hendrix.
Auto Express ****

James Hale's A-Z review has been updated for fifth edition. From Albar to Vulture, more than 100 manufacturers are listed, while dune buggy legend Bruce Meyers provides an introduction. The celebrity photo gallery, including shots of Jimi Hendrix, is a pleasant bonus.
Classic & Sports Car

If you have any interest in these very '60s/'70s-style fun vehicles, this definitely is a book for you.
New Zealand Classic Car

THIS ISN'T EXACTLY heartland Octane fare, but it is brilliant! Hale, a former buggy manufacturer himself, is widely recognised as the world's leading authority on this particular (and peculiar) breed of fun car, and this A-Z of buggies is incredibly detailed given the sheer number of vehicles mentioned herein. So if you want to know more about the Glitterbug, the Kyote (as styled by the late hot rod legend Dean Jeffries, dontcha know) or the Ocelot SIS, then look no further.
What really sets this apart from other buggy books is the wealth of images: we loved the pic of a GP Super Buggy from the Bond flick For Your Eyes Only, and the promo shot of the Bushwacker (a woman in hot pants and kinky boots, armed with a whip ... ) for that matter. And the number of period magazine covers, ads and other ephemera from Hale's vast archive really brings the subject to life. What's more, Bruce Meyers, the man who conceived the beach buggy, provides the foreword.
Octane

... examines the Sixties phenomenon that replaced hot-rodding among young American motorists. It's entertaining, comprehensive, and the cars are often much more serious sports machines than you'd ever suspect.
