The story of Superprix, Birmingham’s very own road race – the subject of much controversy amongst residents of the city, politicians' and race fans alike. Synopsis
The SuperPrix was a motor racing meeting held over August Bank Holiday on a street circuit in the centre of Birmingham, from 1986 to 1990. The principal event was the Formula 3000 Championship race, but support races included touring cars and sports cars. The idea of a motor race in the heart of England's nlotor city (to emulate the Monaco circuit) had been mooted as early as 1966. In the end, the city's arterial roads round the Bull Ring and the city centre provided one of the most exciting racing events ever staged in the UK. Independent Reviews
"An interesting account of the 19-year battle to get racing onto the street of Birmingham and the subsequent meetings. Some fine images accompany the text." – Motor Sport
"Martin Hone's long battle to establish the event via a series of 'On the Street' demonstrations, and the setbacks associated with running such an enterprise, from vandalism to council bureaucracy, are all documented here, as are all the races that made up a unique series of events that we are unlikely ever to see again in this country." – Speedscene
"For those who never made it there, [this book] will give you a flavour of the excitement of an event whose like we will never see again." – The Marshal
"As well as a good selection of photographs, this 96-page publication also features poster and programme-cover artwork, plus a circuit map, event timetables and F300 race results." – Classic & Sports Car
