Description

The development and production history of the elegant and luxurious mainstream Rolls-Royce and Bentley models built between 1947 and 1965. Arguably, these cars - all built on chassis and echoing pre-war practices - were the last of the 'traditional' Rolls-Royce and Bentley models. Many, many of these cars have survived to the present day: all are eminently collectible. Covering concept, design and development, production, promotion, publicity and the coachbuilt cars. There is also helpful practical advice on buying and running these cars today, together with appendices of chassis number sequences and dates, build numbers and modifications and development by chassis number. Illustrated with over 160 black and white and colour photos, this book is a must have for anyone interested in automotive history.

Synopsis

The Bentley MkVI, introduced in 1946, fairly bristled with new ideas and marked a bold change of direction for a company as conservative as Rolls-Royce, owner of the Bentley marque. The most radical departure from pre-war practice was the fact that the MkVI could be bought with a standard body. Other major new features were the engine, cruciform chassis and hydraulically operated front brakes. However, none of this indicates the true historical importance of the MkVI or why the model is at the heart of this book-quite simply the MkVI s design was the well-spring from which all the mainstream Rolls-Royce and Bentley models flowed until the advent of the Silver Shadow and Bentley T-Series in 1965. Here is the complete story of the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, Silver Dawn and Silver Cloud and the Bentley MkVI, R-Type and S-Type.

Independent Reviews

"The chapters are short for quick fact-checking, and each is packed with appropriate historical photography. A 17-page color gallery provides a pleasant gathering of stately models. For the technically curious, appendices that identify such details as year-by-year modifications and build numbers for the various models prove most helpful." – Automobile Quarterly

"Illustrated with over 160 black and white and color photographs, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in automotive history." – Restored Cars

"... an excellent example of how a 'model history' should be ... if I were even remotely interested in buying or restoring one – this would certainly be on my reading list. Definitely recommended." – Beaded Wheels

"A very useful introduction to anyone contemplating buying one of these cars." – The Automobile

"The elegant post-war Bentley and Rolls-Royce models are covered in depth. Nutland has clearly done his research and the book’s packed with info and stories." – Classics Monthly

"Martyn Nutland’s latest 176-page reissue and revamp of his earlier well-received work on the postwar Bentley MkV1, R-Type, Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn and Silver Wraith and the Bentley S-Series and Rolls-Royce Silver Clouds hits the spot by providing owners of this distinct ‘family’ of postwar cars with just the right balance of fact, history, anecdote and opinion." – Gay Classic Car Group

"The last examples of traditional Rolls-Royce and Bentley automobiles are covered in this wonderful book by Martyn Nutland, who puts the development and use of the cars in the social context of the car's birthplace to provide a great understanding of the cars' role, not only in Bentley and Rolls-Royce history, but that of England itself. Coachbuilt models, concept version and production cars are all included, as are tips on buying and maintaining these handsome automobiles." – Old Cars Weekly

"... this book, by a dedicated Bentley driver, gives a very good general and balanced picture of these models. I recommend it not only to the hardened enthusiast, but also to the potential buyer of one of these cars and also to the general student of motoring history." – New Zealand Rolls-Royce & Bentley Club Inc,

"Martyn Nutland has provided us with an excellent guide to many of our favourite cars. By combining development history, road impressions from the time, clear explanations of the often complex systems employed by the company, chassis numbers for modifications, and suggestions for today’s owners, he has come up with a very useful book. It is packed with useful information and memories of engineers, owners, and competition drivers. The illustrations are drawn from a wide data base, with contemporary photographs and drawings often from brochures and private collections, good coverage of the specialist coachwork at the end of its cycle, and even diagrams clear enough to be able to gain some understanding of the S Series ventilation, heating, and air conditioning." – New Zealand Rolls-Royce & Bentley Touring Club's magazine

"If you have a spare slot in your bookcase for a rather special volume and an important reference work, fill it with The Bentley Mk VI book." – Chester Standard
