The 1955 to 1965 decade is considered by many to be a golden era of sports car racing and rallying, when the factory-supported cars in competition were virtually identical to those sold in showrooms. This was also a great time to be a mechanic in the British Motors Corporation's Competitions Department, when the famous drivers and unsung mechanics were all colourful characters, and popular cars like MGs, Austin-Healeys and BMC Minis were racing to glory under the Union Jack. One man was in the thick of it all during that period and beyond, and this is the result.
Despite the best intentions, personal recollections in book form can sometimes end up being tedious and self-congratulatory bores; delightfully, this is not the case of 'Works Rally Mechanic': Brian Moylan's Tales of the BMC/BL Works Rally Department from 1955 to 1979. The stories that this 22-year veteran of the Abingdon-based British Motor Corporation/British Leyland Competitions Department shares chronicle the evolution of the 'works', and the corporate policies that shaped its existence.
In addition to a focus on early rallying, Moylan recounts the trials and tribulations of racing the Austin 1800s, Morris Marinas and Triumph TR7s. Also shared in fascinating detail are the running modifications that these production-based racers received to stay in the running. Fans of BMC/British Leyland cars will also enjoy a treasure of rarely seen photographs, many of which came from the personal collections of the author and his co-workers; 'Works Rally Mechanic' is a must for any Anglophile's bookshelf.
